![]() ![]() ![]() In Photoshop there's lots of ways how to get lettering rough and cracked looking. Then I bring the paths into Photoshop (bouncing them through Adobe Illustrator to do so). I'll lay out the original type as vector artwork (so I can get all my kerning and other anal retentive stuff just right). Sometimes I'll use Adobe Photoshop for this sort of thing. Now add color to your vector texture and you are good to go. Now just take your new vector texture image, place it over the vector shape you would like to add the texture to and use intersect. When you like what you see in the preview Click OK. Select "Specify Color" then pick white or black (depending on the image) with the eye dropper tool and check "Remove Color from entire image". Then under "Options" check "Delete Original Image" and "Remove Background". Adjust "Detail" and "Smoothing" to your liking. Go to "Outline Trace" then "Line Art" Once in PowerTRACE go to the colors tab and make sure "black and white" is selected. Go to "Trace Bitmap" it will be in the properties bar. Next, open the Color panel and choose CMYK from the tooltip menu in the top right corner of the panel. Now simply paste in the vector texture that you copied to your clipboard earlier and stretch the texture over your artwork you want to grunge up. ![]() Go to the document that you want to add the grunge effect to and select the piece of artwork specifically and open the Transparency panel and double click on the new layer mask thumbnail and then uncheck the “Clip” box. Filling the Texture Mask with a Rich BlackĬopy those bits of black grunge that are left behind to your clipboard. Go Object>Expand to open up the image trace and then grab the magic wand tool and click on the white area of the image trace and hit your delete key to get rid of everything except the black bits of texture left. Tweak and play with the Image Trace settings until you get a texture that you like. Drag any image you like into Illustrator and click on the “Image Trace” button and use any one of the presets that will give you only black and white shapes.
